Misremembering the Alamo

This may be a "No, duh" example for you, the reader, but today I learned that the Alamo (and the fight for Texas's independence from Mexico) was almost completely a battle to maintain the right for Anglos from the American South — who had been settling in the Mexican state — to own slaves. Slavery was illegal in Mexico, but the white cotton-growers from Mississippi and other states equated their freedom with the freedom to own other people.
