Friday News Dump, and Polling Positives

Well... I haven't been paying much attention today, but I gather:

  • the Dow Jones dropped 700 points by close of business,
  • that very late in the day Trump started purging the top leaders at the Pentagon, replacing them (so far) with less qualified white men,
  • he started his day with the governor of Maine telling him she would see him in court, after he violated the 10th Amendment on camera in front of a room full of people. She was previously the state's attorney general.

All of this followed a lot of news about how Trump, Musk, and their actions are increasingly unpopular. Rachel Maddow summarized a number of polls on Thursday evening, from general approval polls to questions on specific policies or actions.

One of the most interesting contrasts, in my opinion, is the difference between the percent who say they are strong supporters of Trump (27%) and those who support his pardon of violent January 6 felons (14%) — a drop of 13% among his core supporters. There's an even bigger difference when it comes to the measly 9% who say the U.S. should trust Vladimir Putin, which is essentially Trump's foreign policy position.

It's also good to know that 37% of respondents in the same poll said they strongly opposed Trump and his actions. In that poll (from the Washington Post and Ipsos, February 13–18), Trump's overall favorability was –8%. That's 53% unfavorable, 45% favorable: the lowest of any president in polling history at this point in a presidency.

And remember, 18 of those 45 favorable percenters don't consider themselves strong supporters... that's where the movement can happen.
