With Minnesota suddenly in the spotlight these days, I thought it might be good to share this map I saw in the Star Tribune a couple of days ago:
I was surprised that our Gini Coefficient is relatively so low, compared to other U.S. states. The U.S. average has stayed the same — .47 — since I put up that post back in 2010, but compared to a tab write-up I posted 10 years ago, Minnesota's has improved since 2012, to the point where it's 7th best in the country.
According to the article that accompanied the map, Maine had the lowest number (.37), and South Dakota the highest (.52) for the data year 2022. But when I tried to find the original source for this, other sites about the Gini Index for states in that year showed various results, none of which had those at the end points, or Minnesota quite in the same spot, either. I gather there are various ways to compute these numbers.
So take it with a grain of salt, I guess... but at least around here there may be a bit of progress.
