Living in the Past

Another find from Minnesota archivist Gary Hornseth:

May 1948:
“3 HIGH SPEED DAY TRAINS TO ST. PAUL-MINNEAPOLIS”
Union Station, Chicago

A second Amtrak train trip per day between Chicago and the Twin Cities (in each direction) began just last week, which is big news in these parts. It was supposed to start last fall, and before that in early summer of 2023, and before that probably even earlier. So we're back to two a day. Yay!

And that's just standard speed, not "high speed"... although I don't know what they meant by high speed in 1948. Maybe it's the same speed the train goes now, though that seems doubtful since the tracks are the same ones 75 years later and they're probably in worse condition now.

Still, I'm glad for the new train trip availability, since it will be more reliable than the Empire Builder, which is often hours late coming from the west because it has to yield right-of-way to freight trains.

One-way coach fares between Chicago and Saint Paul start at $41 one way; the price of a tank of gas, as some tell it.
