As I've said before, I have few regrets about not paying the New York Times money for a subscription. Missing out on reading Jamelle Bouie's columns as soon as they appear is at the top of the list.
In what I think is his most recent (reprinted today in the Pioneer Press, gift link), he explained in detail why Nikki Haley is wrong about Texas's right to secede. I learned a lot quickly about the underpinnings of "compact theory" in that single column, almost none of which I remember hearing before.
Worth a read.
