Mosaics at the Chicago Cultural Center

I'm not sure how obvious it is from past posts, but I love mosaics.

The former main library in Chicago, which opened in 1897, was converted into its current use as the Chicago Cultural Center in 1977 when a new main library was built in another part of downtown.

The design of the Cultural Center is in the neoclassical Italian Renaissance style, with many domes and arches. And mosaics. Many, many mosaics.

A close-up along one of the stairways:

Quotations in multiple languages (and writing systems) are arrayed around two rooms that flank the center room:

This is my favorite quote from the area above the center stairway:

If you're visiting Chicago and you haven't seen the Cultural Center, stop in!

It’s an awesome building, and it’s easy to spend a lot of time looking upward.

My favorite there is Isaac Barrow (1630–1677), on being a scholar: “He that loveth a book will never want a faithful friend, a wholesome counsellor, a cheerful companion, an effectual comforter.”
