I recently learned that the silhouette portrayed on the coin called the Indian-head nickle is a portrait of primarily one specific person: a man named Iron Tail (which is Siŋté Máza in Standard Lakota Orthography).
He was a celebrity of the late 19th and early 20th century through his role as a star performer in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. He had been photographed by a number of well-known photographers in addition to his performances around the world.
The coin was designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser.
