As I looked ahead down the sidewalk, I noticed that (like other spots in Saint Paul) the concrete curved around the base of a tree that was no longer there.
This tree was a more recent removal than that one I had seen earlier, however, because the stump was still there. It was probably an ash tree cut down because of the terrible emerald ash borer insect.
As I came alongside the stump, I noticed there was more going on than just a sad reminder of our city's tree loss:
The city will be along some time to grind the stump out, and a new tree will be planted.
I wonder if the cat will win the game before that happens?
