We've got not one but two ballot initiatives in Minnesota this fall. I've written a lot about the one that would mandate voter suppression, but I haven't had as much to say about the one that would enshrine a particular definition of marriage in our constitution.
Here's the language:
Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to provide that only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Minnesota?And this in a state that already has a law that says basically the same thing. But as soon as our friends on the Right took both houses of the Legislature in 2010, they pushed this amendment through, despite the laser focus they promised to place on jobs and the economy.
Because, you know, Iowa's Supreme Court declared a law like that unconstitutional a few years ago. (The marriage amendment used to be Michele Bachmann's pet bill back when she was in our Legislature, but it never got out of committee back in those days.)
Anyway. All of this is just a set up for a photo I took today:
In case you find my glary picture hard to read, it says "Dumbledore wants you to Vote No."
Dumbledore might also be against the voter suppression amendment, but, given his unpublished back-story, it seems more likely the writer of this note had the marriage amendment in mind.
