World Dryer or Dryer World?

Knowing my love of diaper-changing iconography, a friend recently sent me a photo of a new one. Then I saw it myself while I was on the road recently:


In responding to my friend about it, it I wrote: "It looks like a hot air balloon on fire."

But when I saw it in person, what struck me was that the name of the company is presented incorrectly in the blue type. The letters W and D in the circle indicate the order should be World Dryer, and this is verified in the small type at the bottom, near the phone number.

But the name the baby is grabbing appears to be Dryer World.

Weird.

It's been a while since I posted an example of diaper-changing-table iconography. Seems like the ones I see lately are all the same.

Until today. This one was seen on the outskirts of Green Bay, Wisconsin:


And just in case you can't get close enough to that scary iconography, here it is larger than any of us could possibly enjoy:

A New Lutheran Social Service Logo

Lutheran Social Services has a new logo. And what do you know, it's a major improvement over their old one!

Before:


Boring, if readable, type (Palatino... very desktop-publishing-1987-looking). Colors that seem to evoke the old Norwest Bank identity (it's a Minnesota thing, sorry if it doesn't resonate for you). And that symbol... what is it? Someone playing ultimate frisbee?

After:


The now bolder, sans serif type is still readable (and better for social media and web uses). The colors have a lot more pop. And the designers have made a clever LS interaction that combines to make a heart with a burning flame atop, referring to classic Christian iconography without looking stodgy.

Posters for Posterity: Charlottesville 2017

For the sake of posterity, here are four posters that were used to promote the Unite the Right march in Charlottesville, Virginia, on the weekend of August 12, 2017.


This one appears to have been distributed the most widely. It uses a red, white, and blue color scheme (USA! USA!), though it's clearly based on a Nazi style that would have used black instead of blue. The bottom one-fifth is all about Confederate symbolism, but the top 80 percent goes full Nazi.

The type choice is interesting: It's a stencil style, a bit similar to Stop, the font used in Star Trek the Next Generation. Kind of ’70s techno look, heavy and masculine.

The overall design gets points for its relative simplicity, using a symmetrical arrangement. The bottom is cluttered, however. The type hierarchy is a bit weak, though not terrible. The speaker names that are printed in black have fairly bad contrast against the red background.


This poster is a mess from a design perspective. Everything wants to be important, so nothing is important, and the blue/black color combination is very low-contrast. It uses four typefaces, including a delicate brush-lettering style called Sign Painter House Script to create a headline that's weak and wimpy. Not very virile, guys! Maybe this one was supposed to appeal to the chicks, eh? I wonder if that worked.

The heroic, Aryan couple (facing left in this right-wing layout, I note) is a flipped version of a Soviet couple from a 1961 poster for the USSR's space program (viewable here), originally done in red and yellow. It looked a lot better in the original, and the clueless arrangement of the name Charlottesville on the banner adds a final insult to the general ripoff.


This poster from the Daily Stormer is the most clearly antisemitic among the four, with a badly drawn muscleman smashing the Star of David. He's faceless so you can picture yourself in his place, I guess. It's got the black and red Nazi color scheme, too. The layout doesn't give a location or time for the gathering, so I wonder if people who saw this one made it there with their torches and weapons in time.


Identity Evropa (sic) is a recently formed white nationalist group that targets college campuses, and the design of the last poster reflects that. No Nazi iconography here — just a design that could be a movie poster, maybe something for the next Superman film.

Again, it uses a simple, symmetrical design, though it probably made a better social media graphic than an actual poster because it doesn't really pop off the page. It uses two sans serif fonts (very European), with notably bad kerning in the word YOU. And again, no time or place is given.

Wear a Skirt When You Change that Diaper!

I knew I couldn't be the only one who noticed the iconography of diaper-changing tables. Nation writer Jessica Valenti recently posted this to her Tumblr:


With the comment: "Dudes are the default…until there’s a diaper to change."

She saw these on a Jet Blue flight. Although to be fair, how many women need to be told to put their trash in the container? And I still can't figure out why anyone needs to be urged to sit in the seat.

More About "The Middle," and Meeting Some of the Middle

Since I posted about the Springsteen/Jeep ad yesterday, I've seen a few more things on that topic that I thought were worth sharing.

First, David Perry (@lollardfish) compiled his various thoughts into a Patreon post he called Jeep and The Boss Make Christian Nationalist Propaganda. Perry is a medieval historian, so when he says there's visual religious symbolism at work... believe him. He's also a secular Jew.

A couple of quotes to whet your interest:

I have visited an awful lot of churches with an awful lot of political imagery. In fact, the political religious culture of Venice was my subfield as a scholar. I like churches and other well crafted sacred spaces. I like to visit them and think about iconography. But they aren't mine. They don't include me, unless I want to convert (I do not, thanks). So if a message of unity is surrounded by crosses, then it's a unity that deliberately excludes me.

and

Christianity is the dominant religion in the U.S., but white Christian rural America is a tiny subset of that religion given massive political power (thanks mostly to the structure of the Senate) and overwhelming cultural power as well. "The Middle" plays right to that stereotype, excluding anyone doesn't fit the mold. A message intended to unite us (and sell cars) ends up just emphasizing the "real America" right-wing narrative that has done so much harm to us all. 

A second article I saw is by Joe Lowndes, a political science professor at the University of Oregon who studies right-wing populism. His piece is called Bruce Springsteen, Unity, and the Problem of "The Middle." It's longer, more academic, and covers similar ground about Christian nationalism, but it adds analysis about the way the ad also assumes a white settler point of view, and extends it to specifics about our political history since the 1960s. This land is our land, as part of the song says. 

This “herrenvolk republicanism” as historian David Roediger called it, was an assertion of small-holding, homesteading, and laboring whites as the virtuous producers of society. 

Third... a friend who lives in Kansas responded to Jeep's post of the ad on Facebook. The mysterious algorithm put her comment into my feed, which drew me into reading the 132 comments, some of which have hundreds of comments each in reply. 

I didn't look at the replies to the comments, but I did read the 132 initial comments and I would say 90% of them hate the ad, often because of something like this:

Those type of remarks make up maybe half of the replies, including suggestions of other actors (Gary Sinise was a popular choice, or a real farmer or rancher). 

Then there were a range of other critical comments like these:

 

 

 

 

 

There were several comments about the red star used to mark the location of Lebanon, Kansas, at the end of the ad. I think this was the only comment that mentioned the music as having an "oriental" tone, though.

Then there was this woman (second comment shown here), who somehow thought the ad was pro-Trump? Maybe? Or just clueless?

 

And to close out, in the interest of showing how divergent people's points of view can be from my own, this is my personal favorite comment from a person who thought there was no mention of god in the video:

One final note: I can't believe I forgot to mention in my post yesterday that the three tall, roadside crosses shown in the ad are a life-sized reference to Christ's execution on Calvary... and with the barbed wire right there in the foreground, reminding any Christian of the crown of thorns. Silly me.

Tar Sands Resistance March, June 6

A large group of organizations is sponsoring a march and rally to demonstrate resistance to the use of Canadian tar sands as fuel in our post-peak-oil world.


It's on June 6, starting at noon with a march from Lambert Landing (at the Mississippi River right behind Union Depot in downtown Saint Paul) to the State Capitol.

Leave this junk in the ground! We can't burn it all without making our world incompatible with modern life. Not to mention the fact that extracting it is turning pristine Canadian wilderness, which should belong to native peoples, into a hellscape. Plus, if we leave it in the ground, no one has to put it on a train bomb that rolls past our houses or in a pipeline that harms rural areas even when it's not spilling toxic crap.

I want to congratulate the organizers of the march on designing a successful poster and logo. Great job calling up traditional protest iconography while connecting the visuals with both the dirtiness of oil and our geographic region (check out the fingers in that fist).

The march is sponsored by the Sierra Club, 350, Interfaith Power & Light, the Indigenous Environmental Network, the National Wildlife Federation, and the Energy Action Coalition.

12 Sentences from the Past for the New Year

I spent the day cleaning out the basement, so I haven't had much time to write something for the first day of the new year. Inspired by Michael Leddy at Orange Crate Art (who was in turn inspired by another blogger), today's post is made up of the first sentence of the first post from each month in 2009.

Michael says it's an exercise in parataxis, one of those lovely Greek terms I never managed to learn during my years as an English major:

A couple of my friends recently added themselves as fans of Wendell Berry on their Facebook profiles. In the early '90s, I attended a design conference that had Chip Kidd as a speaker. As a little girl, I played with Barbies. Now that I've finished Clay Shirky's Here Comes Everybody: The Power of Organizing without Organizations, I'm recommending it to anyone who has an interest in the ways things have been changing lately -- the death of the newspaper, the rise of social media, the shift in how politics operates, and more. I almost choked when I heard about the Wall Street Journal story that said over 450,000 Americans are making a decent living by blogging. I've posted before about the strange iconography of diaper-changing tables, mostly ones I saw while on a cross-country drive. From the land of LOLcats comes GraphJam.com, in which users submit graphs on any topic that pleases them, and other users vote on the best ones. What a combination -- an authentic 19th century horse hitching post, funky vernacular lettering, and an easily misreadable message (they have baby goats for sale, in case you were wondering if you should call child protective services). I'm generally not a big fan of vanity plates, but I liked this one. Today's Star Tribune celebrated the 40th anniversary of the paper's Taste section. I love the mapping of food customs and language conventions related to food (like my long-ago post about the usage of soda vs. pop). Knowing I would be in Flatbush, I did a little research to see what might be off the beaten path, and found out that Erasmus Hall high school is on the north end of the neighborhood.

Whew. I sure talk about myself a lot. Perhaps in 2010 I can resolve to stop using "I" quite so much.

Changing Tiny Tim

I've posted before about the strange iconography of diaper-changing tables, mostly ones I saw while on a cross-country drive. When you stay close to home you see a lot of the same design over and over (in the Twin Cities, that consists of various Koala Bear Kare iterations).

So I was happy to see a different design at the Walker Art Museum last weekend:


I couldn't help noticing how much the baby resembled the drawing of Tiny Tim from Mr. Magoo's Christmas:

A Centennial in Ceramics

Clearly, I'm fascinated by simplified graphics that are meant to represent places and their people. For instance, I've written about bas relief doors in St. Paul and Rome, and paintings in St. Paul.

Today's it's a 1958 ceramic trivet, made by Red Wing Potteries to commemorate Minnesota's first centennial as a state:

I love how Red Wing and Minnesota have grown larger than Texas. (And may I say, that is an extremely odd map overall. What is going on north of New Mexico? Not to mention poor, poor Wisconsin.)

The iconography of the front is pretty simplified, compared to the much larger doors and paintings I've commented on before:


In this case, we've got a 1950s headband woman on the left. She and her male counterpart generally wouldn't look out of place in a Hitler youth promo. She holds a farm with pine trees while he holds a city, dominated by a Christian cross. The two vignettes are connected by water and some type of battleship (just kidding, it's a barge).

Quite a period piece. Now we're almost 60 years into the second century of the state, and I hope most people realize we can't be represented in this simplified way anymore.

Bizarre Iconography of Diaper-Changing Tables

There are aliens among us.

Or, at least, that's what you'd think if you based your mental image of humans on the way they are portrayed in the graphics on the fold-out diaper changing tables found in the public restrooms of America.
