Among all the weird maps that Facebook shows me for some reason, I saw this one a few days ago. For some reason the labels are in Swedish, but that's not why I thought it was notable:
Of course, it has the usual problem of the Mercator projection — making Canada and Alaska look a lot larger than they are — but ignoring that, the thing it showed me was that the size of the Mediterranean Sea is similar to the interior of the lower 48 United States.
It makes it visible that sailing from the eastern shore of the Black Sea, through Constantinople, to Valencia, Spain was approximately the same distance as going from Washington, D.C. to San Francisco. Going through the Straits of Gibraltar, all the way to the western shore of Iberia or Morocco was even farther.
