I've mentioned before the dissonance I experience with family members who are fully MAGA-aligned or in some way pro-Trump. The closest of these relatives I know to be generous and generally kind people, so it is painful to square that with the inherent racism (etc) in their political beliefs.
I've just finished listening to the three-part podcast called Alternate Realities, in which a guy named Zach Mack — who does podcasts for Vox — makes a bet with his conspiracy-theory-believing dad and attempts to talk to him about his beliefs over a year.
It's a great bit of journalism and intense personal and familial exploration. And sheds befuddling light on how a person like his dad can continue to believe what he believes, even though it's wrecking his family.
