Way too many bad things happened or started happening today on the federal level (and one mostly good thing from the Supreme Court). So I can't deal with writing about any of those.
Instead, a follow-up on words that seem like they might be related but aren't. A few days ago, I wrote about pore and pour. Today it's the word sound.
I just found out that from Merriam-Webster that its various meanings are all from different derivations:
Sound as in loud sound, safe and sound), and body of water are not related.
Sound (loud) comes from Latin sonus.
Sound (safe and) comes from Old English gesund, meaning healthy. I assume that uses like "sound reasoning" would be from this usage.
Sound (water) comes from Old Norse sund, meaning strait.
