No one seems to have any idea how many people were at the Minnesota State Capitol today for the Hands Off demonstration. We all compare it to the 2017 Women's March, which was thought to be attended by 90,000–100,000 people, and are basing our relative guesses on that.
But the Women's March was a march that started everyone in more-or-less one place in a fairly compact time frame, while today's demonstration saw people arriving from all directions over an hour or more past the official start time.
Whatever number the Women's March was, I would put today at close to half its number. At least. I guess?
Unfortunately, I don't have access to an aerial shot of the Women's March. My best image of the density of the Women's March is this, which was taken from the back of the Capitol lawn:
Here's a photo from today, shot from farther away, across Martin Luther King Drive:
Here's an overhead view taken today from upstairs inside the Capitol, posted to social media by one of our state legislators:
My previous photo was taken across the street at the very back of this whole crowd, after more people had accumulated there. So this overhead photo must have been taken before we and the other people we were near got back there. And obviously, there are a lot more people outside the frame of the photo on the left and right sides as well.
There were a lot of great signs and banners, of course, though not a lot of people in costume that I saw. Here's one exception:
This was my favorite photo today. I've cropped it to slightly strange proportions to remove the faces at the bottom:
Can't be too careful these days.

I thought at first that the loon was a plague doctor, which would also fit.
My first photo of the loon had it face-forward, which would have been even more indistinguishable... then I thought to have the person turn to the side.
