Today I learned the name of the smooth-paved part of this stairway, which is created for taking bikes up the stairs:
I found out via Dongho Chang, Washington State's traffic engineer, who posted this photo from Iceland.
They're called runnels.
I've seen a few and had no idea they had a name.
