24 Countries

Today I learned the fact that is given in this graphic from the UN Refugee Agency:

In 24 countries, women are not able to pass on nationality to their own children, which makes the children of single mothers stateless.

This is patriarchal bullshit at its most obvious.

It is not the same, but it reminds me of the growing right-wing movement in the U.S. to abolish birth-right citizenship, which became law under the 14th Amendment. That change would create huge numbers of stateless people in the U.S., as happened recently when the Dominican Republic revoked citizenship for people of Haitian descent born in the D.R.
