New Organic Valley Milk Package

I don't always notice when a brand changes its packaging, but I happened to catch the old and new Organic Valley milk carton designs in my kitchen recently, one empty, on its way out, and one full, on its way in.

(For no good reason, I have old on the right and new on the left in my photos.)

Major changes on the front panel:

  • They made the decision to switch from photography to illustration
  • They dumped the personalized farmer concept.
  • The color scheme is brighter overall, with the red pop, and more green shades.
  • The differentiation of whole milk (vs. skim or 2%) is a bit stronger, with larger type, a sans serif typeface, and the initial letter set on a white oval.

They've done more with the nutrition panel side, adding a red headline and more background illustration, including a subtle wind turbine. On this panel and the other two back and side panels, eliminating the cream-colored background box results in a cleaner, less cluttered layout.

The back panel no longer is used to cross-sell other products. The happy, leaping cow on the horizon accompanies clearly ordered text that's all focused on milk, repurposing some of the copy that used to be on the side panel.

The side panel, which now focuses more fully on family farms, has much less copy than the old package, making it more readable. The QR code as a barn door is a nice touch.

Good job!
