Tea vs. Chai

Today, in words I never thought much about before, but now can't believe I never heard this before: tea vs. chai.

And yes, I learned about it from Twitter. This is another little part of my premourning its ongoing demolition, and represents the kind of thing that just shows up in front of me every day.

If tea spread to your country by sea you call it tea, if it spread by land you call it chai. This is because the ports of Fujian and Taiwan use the coastal pronunciation "te", whereas Mandarin uses "chá."
