More Cartoon Villainy

If you're like me, you've heard it said many times that some example of modern MAGAism would be rejected by a Hollywood script editor if a writer put it in a story because it's too far-fetched or too much of a stereotyped example of evil.

I keep thinking about that every time I hear about the Doctor-Oz-killed-puppies story.

Doctor Oz killed hundreds of dogs, some of them puppies.

It sounds made up! But it isn't.

As Amanda Marcotte, a writer at Salon put it,

It's wild that a mere 10 years ago, Mitt Romney was getting destroyed for putting one dog, who survived, on the roof.... [Oz] didn't just kill dogs. He tortured them. He put live puppies in bags with dead ones. He injected stuff in dog hearts without anesthesia or pain meds.... This is abject, pointless cruelty to animals, and for no good reason. The kind that appears to have gotten him in real trouble with Columbia.

The original reporting was in Jezebel, based on reviewing 75 studies Oz published between 1989 and 2010. More than a thousand animals — including at least 329 dogs — were killed in 34 experiments. It was documented in the early 2000s that the experiments violated the Animal Welfare Act.

I'll omit the most gruesome details (you can read them in the linked articles if you want). But I think it's important to point out that the cruelty continued even when no useful data could be collected.

Oz was the principal investigator for these studies. He was responsible, one way or another, especially if he wants to be trusted with a responsible position like U.S. Senator.
