Today I learned about the existence of flow batteries. It sounds as though some, at least, are made up of elements that are readily available (as opposed to lithium, for instance).
They appear to be well-suited to large-scale use on the electrical grid for load balancing and dealing with peaking. They may have some electric vehicle applications as well.
There's serious investment going into some of these companies so this doesn't appear to be pie-in-the-sky stuff. Hmm.
