I remember the summer of 1988 here in Minnesota. It was only my second one here, and it was blasted hot.
Well, I just saw this from one of Minnesota Public Radio's weather people:
Check this out Twin Cities & Minnesota. You've just experienced the longest summer on record by the metric of consecutive 70-degree days. Tuesday marks the 118th straight day of at least 70-degree temperatures at MSP. It's been a Des Moines summer.
Temperatures this summer have been 2–6°F above average* across Minnesota, 4.3°F above in the Twin Cities.
But it's not the hottest summer on record. Oh no, that honor belongs to last year which was also blasted hot, and a drought to boot. 1988 comes in second for hottest on record.
Full story here.

* Remember, "average" to meteorologists does not mean an average of all the weather records available... it's a rolling 30-year average, so warming is built into the records as they go along.
