I've been trying to remember every musical act of any significance that I saw live. I tend to think that I haven't seen very many for someone of my generation, partly because I lost interest fairly early (definitely by the age of 30, I'd say), and partly because I didn't see many acts as a young person, given that I lived in a rural area and we didn't have a lot of money.
Here's what I remember, in chronological order to the best of my ability. It's possible I'll think of a few others.
High school era
- America
- Harry Chapin (with his brothers)
College era
- Steve Forbert
- The Kinks (this might have been the same show as Steve Forbert...does it make sense that Steve Forbert would have opened for the Kinks?)
- Squeeze (with Flock of Seagulls opening)
- The Police (with Black Uhuru opening, but I missed most of their set because we were late)
- The Roches
- Sweet Honey in the Rock (with Sisters of the Calabash opening)
Post-college, but before Minnesota
- The Dead Kennedys (at Rock Against Reagan, 1983)
- David Bowie (the Serious Moonlight tour, don't remember who opened because again we were late and missed it)
- Sweet Honey in the Rock
- Bruce Springsteen (the later part of the Born in the USA tour)
- Joan Armatrading
- Gil Scott-Heron
In Minnesota
- Suzanne Vega (at the Minneapolis Orpheum)
- Billy Bragg (with Michelle Shocked opening, at First Avenue)
- Sweet Honey in the Rock (with Daughter Number Three-Point-One when she was 8 or so, and not really old enough to appreciate them)
Yes, I have seen Sweet Honey in the Rock three times, so they win!
