Twitter September 2020, a New Order

We're heading into the last full month of this election season from hell: September and October are the last two full Twitter round-ups before we get some results on or close to November 3 (we hope). And I find that I just can't face the work it takes to reorganize all of these paragraphs of text into categories and then set up the block quotes, partly because of the technical debacle that is the new Blogger engine.

So I'm just going to run them in reverse chronological order for at least this month. That way you can see what it looks like to me when I deal with these posts, and I hope it's not too overwhelming (as if anyone reads these Twitter round-up posts anyway. Hmm).

Despite not doing all of the cutting and pasting, I could still see the topics emerge as I worked my way through. We've got COVID and comments about Mafia Mulligan throughout. There's the Gish Gallop debate tweets, of course, which are all pretty close together. Mulligan's lack of tax payments and his general indebtedness. The attempted stealing of yet another Supreme Court seat, a situation created by the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Oh, and the West Coast is on fire — remember that?

Then further back in the month, we've got the revelations of Bob Woodward's book and the fact that he withheld them (remember that!), and Mulligan calling dead soldiers suckers and losers. The Kyle Rittenhouse shootings in Kenosha. And all that is overlaid with the usual white supremacy, sexism, and climate catastrophe.

Now that Mulligan has COVID, all of these other stories may get forgotten as well, so it's good to get them stored away in the September filing cabinet.

I welcome comments on whether you like this arrangement better or not.

It’s sort of wild how many people miss the obvious, which is that Trump’s cruelty appeals disproportionately to *men* across socioeconomic lines.

If you think Trump talks like a working class person you have more sneering contempt for the working class than any coastal elite.

Urbanists are going to have to confront the reality that it doesnt matter how fast and frequent public transit is *by itself* if public transit is about as expensive as driving especially with more than 1 person. Doesn't mean fares have to be free but they need to be cheap.
@IDoTheThinking

A bias of The Media that never gets talked about is the strong bias toward coherence. Make a reporter sit through a bizarre, rambling, nonsensical speech and they’ll be inclined to summarize it in some way that makes actual sense and grab the single sensical quote.
Bryn Stole

I’ve often heard it said that to whom much is given, much is required.  But not the other part: to whom nothing is given we expect even more.
jelani cobb

Cosby and Weinstein eventually went to jail because the pressure kept up. It’s baffling to me that a reporter doesn’t ask *The President* about his sexual assault allegations every day.
Daniel Kibblesmith

Choose which family members you try to talk to wisely. For example, I’ve got a real verbally abusive “I love to debate/get a rise out of people” conservative in my family who’s told me he doesn’t think I should have the right to marry. Talking to him would be a waste! Instead I TOLD him I was cutting him out of my life and WHY. He doesn’t deserve my politeness to “keep the peace.” That only hurt ME to make HIM comfortable. Sorry, now his brain can no longer say “I’m a good person, cause Janine still likes me.” Fuck that.

The brain-trust of Chris Christie, Rudy Giuliani and Donald Trump came up with a debate strategy that basically centered on reminding women watching of abusive men they dated or married.

One way the conventions of "objective" political journalism are broken is that they draw a false equivalence between one candidate refusing to condemn his white nationalist fans and saying he won't  accept the results of the election with the other guy calling him a "clown."
Adam Serwer

A small thing but telling in terms of Trump’s handle on the Covid-19 pandemic — he vowed to vaccinate 200,000 people a day, which sounds like a large number but equals 73 million per year at which pace you need almost five years to vaccinate everyone.
Matthew Yglesias

Chester @Chester_McFuku

After 4 years in power, Trump is just about ready to (1) release his taxes, (2) roll out his healthcare plan, (3) build the wall, and (4) bring back those jobs from China to Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania. Just a few more weeks. Right around the corner.
Michael McFaul

Trump voters make me wonder if like 45% of the people in our country who went to see Back to the Future were secretly upset at how it turned out.
Steve Harrington’s Bat

Saying the debate was a disgrace because of both candidates is like watching someone try to ballroom dance with a wild cheetah and saying boy that couple can’t dance.
Adam McKay @GhostPanther

After last night you can see the country is facing less an election than a hostage negotiation. Will Trump come out peacefully or is he one of those degenerates who kills his wife and kids on the way out? If he's going to lose he wants to burn the country down with him.
Josh Marshall

The person who told Biden to keep looking at the camera and addressing the viewers deserves a raise. Every time he started a sentence with “Folks” it was like he was breaking the 4th wall on the world’s shittiest reality tv program.

Biden's a mediocre live speaker. But he appears sincere, he seems genuinely to care about Americans, he wants the world to be better rather than worse, he loves his family and he would clearly murder Trump with a brick if it was allowed by the debate rules. What else do you need.

The subtext of the New York Times report is the crucial importance of “The Apprentice” to Trump’s finances and ultimately his political career. No “Apprentice,” no cash flow to prop up many loss-making businesses. No “Apprentice,” no myth of Trump as a financial whiz to run on.

This is a reminder that the IRS audits way more people who make under $30,000 per year than they do millionaires because the GOP repeatedly stripped their funding and the poor don't have the resources to fight the IRS, while the rich have lawyers to fight them at every turn.

To summarize the NYT story: Trump got a bunch of $ from his daddy. He lost it all, but then he got paid hundreds of millions to play a billionaire on TV. He tried to use that $ to become a real billionaire, but he lost it all again. Now he's starting over, but we're his daddy.

If you want to understand what's wrong with the U.S. right now, it isn't much more complicated than this: through a series of crimes, ignominious political operations, and unconscionable detours from tradition, the *minority* party in America—the GOP—has seized control of power.

Also worth noting that a wide variety of polls, including from Trump's friends at Fox News, consistently show him 6-12 points behind, yet he denounces them all as "FAKE POLLS." There is no doubt he will say the vote is FAKE and Republican senators will say this is fine.

"Originalism" is sophistry reverse-engineered to serve conservative group interests and is freely thrown overboard any time it drifts into conflict with those interests. This is also true of federalism, fiscal conservatism, "law and order," evangelical morality, and all the rest of it.
David Roberts

This is such a farce. The GOP blocked Merrick Garland for 237 DAYS before an election but is rushing to confirm Barrett 38 days before Nov 3. The entire process is illegitimate. It’s a coup in the making and should be treated as such. 866,000 people have already voted in 2020 elections. Millions will have voted by the time the Barrett hearings begin. There's absolutely no reason to confirm her before the election except for Trump to ensure she throws out enough votes to keep him in office.

The fascists are not being inconsistent. They were doing whatever was necessary to advance the white supremacist agenda during the Obama admin and they’re doing the same now. It’s liberals and moderates who keep operating in a fantasy of bipartisanship and constitutionality. This is fundamentally about a power struggle between those who want to ensure white conservative minority rule vs. a multiracial democracy in US. Those who don’t grasp that are not understanding the situation. That’s why they keep expressing shock at conservatives “flip-flopping.”

Mainstream economic theory has really only one function: to celebrate capitalism. The main debate within mainstream economics is, which flavor of capitalism is best? The free, unregulated market flavor, or the one with government regulation?

It's just my own little corner of climate activism, but given what's happening on the West Coast if you still think we should engage in months or years of process to make it possible for people to choose bikes and transit over cars then you are not much better than a denialist.
Doug Gordon @BrooklynSpoke

Quietly contemplating the fact that a woman who accuses the president of rape says she has DNA evidence to corroborate the allegation, and the president, who denies it, has enlisted DOJ to help him avoid providing the DNA evidence that, if he weren’t lying, would exonerate him.

Don't know who needs to hear this (I do!) but there's no meaningful difference between denying climate change and "acknowledging" climate change while continuing to issue permits to ExxonMobil and Shell as the state burns.

September 12 is a solemn date for Republicans. It marks the anniversary of the day in 2001 when they began exploiting what happened on September 11 for their own personal and political gain.

"If you believe your food comes from a landbase and your water comes from a river, then you’ll defend those to the death. If you believe your food comes from the store and your water from the tap, you’ll defend to the death the system that brings those to you." –Derrick Jensen
Shaun Chamberlin @DarkOptimism

Without a lot of under-appreciated and underpaid people producing and preparing food, building things, making things, maintaining infrastructure, generating and transmitting electric power, your whole world collapses. It's not just "stuff" that magically appears. Never forget it. What took hundreds of years of struggle to build up can disappear in an instant when enough bad ideas establish a foothold and people begin to believe nonsense divorced from the way the world actually works. Make it better by building it up, not by tearing it down. You live in the safest, most prosperous civilization in human history. You did little, if anything, to build it. Show a little gratitude for it. It's imperfect. Welcome to Earth.
Jason Segedy

A lot of folks acting as if 2020 has just been a string of bewildering bad luck, rather than what it truly is: a concentration of widely and reliably predicted and interconnected disasters that advanced nations of the world could have mitigated or prevented but chose not to.

We are in the throes of an apocalyptic climate disaster, a generational pandemic, and a burgeoning fascistic death cult and people who should know better are wringing their hands over what to call these things or are otherwise busy figuring out how to best profit off them.

Fire news from the west is unbearable. Still pounding the same C02 drum here: STOP driving so much, MOVE to where you can walk or bike to everything, LIMIT your pleasure and work-trips by air, EAT low on the food chain, and FFS live your life as if something/someone else matters.

This isn’t because “2020 sucks”, it’s because of climate change and the fossil fuel industry, who knew for decades the damage they would cause, but decided to destroy life on earth because it made them rich. This isn’t a “2020 is a bad year” thing, this will continue to worsen:

People who compare our unity after 9/11 to our division today are correct. America was shockingly unified after 9/11. That unity was turned by our leaders into war, surveillance, deportations, concentration camps, and torture.

I've always said this. What drove Trump and the subhuman trash who votes for him up the wall was that someone with a name like Barack Obama would dare to do anything other than clean up their shit. It's all about the name. It's all about what kind of people are "real Americans."

Remember when the Trump campaign made such a big deal out of boat parades & then in their biggest boat parade a bunch of boats sunk because the Trumpies are such selfish assholes that they can't even coordinate enough to keep a LAKE calm enough for a boat parade? Black people do not have constitutional protections, including 2A rights. Rittenhouse was able to shoot and kill people and then walk past police still holding his rifle, but a Black person merely being in possession of a gun or knife is considered justification for them being summarily executed.

Just as birtherism was a way for Republicans to express a belief that Black people can't be president, the Pelosi salon "scandal" is just a back door way to express a belief that women shouldn't be in leadership positions. There is no need to take it seriously, pundits. Certainly, that elaborate hairdo Trump gets done to hide his bald spot is a labor-intensive grooming procedure, but that's not a scandal because no one contests the right of men to be political leaders. Scandalizing women for grooming is also a double-edged sword, because if women appear in public looking sloppy, that is also a scandal. It's deliberately set up so you lose no matter what you do.
