More Voter Suppression

There are so many things about the Republican National Convention and its content to be upset about, especially considering that it's happening as another Black man was shot in the back by police (and now a white militia boi has shot multiple protesters with tacit approval from the local authorities, it appears)…plus huge fires in the West, a hurricane heading for the Gulf Coast, and some other things my brain is no longer able to hold because there are just too many. (Oh yeah! More than a thousand people a day dying from COVID and Iowa in ruins and...)

But the part of it I absolutely could not watch was Mafia Mulligan doing a citizenship oath ceremony and handing out certificates to a handful of immigrants (in the White House!) when he has done everything in his power and beyond his power to fulfill Stephen Miller's dream of a white European America. Those five people smiled their pasted smiles (who were they? how were they selected?) as they were used for his vile agenda and overtly illegal propaganda.

And that was before I knew this detail: More than 300,000 immigrants may not become citizens in time to vote as COVID-19 stalls process. That headline says "COVID-19" but what it really should say is "as the Trump administration stalls process." U.S. Citizenship and Naturalization Services, you see — unlike jsut about everyone else in the country — couldn't figure out how to do its job by Zoom or another remote system.

I wonder why that is? Maybe because someone thinks 300,000 new immigrants are more likely to vote against their boss than for him, and the pandemic has been used as an opportunity?

Another example of how the Republican Party (and the Trump administration) shows it hates democracy.

Update from Michelle Hackman at the Wall Street Journal: "The immigrants who became citizens at last night's naturalization ceremony at the White House were told only minutes beforehand that President Trump would be appearing, and they weren't told that footage of the ceremony would air during the RNC."
