I'm liking the paintings by Jennifer Davis that were recently installed at the Birchwood Cafe in Minneapolis. Davis combines the imaginary and real in almost brittle colors painted onto wooden boards.
Here are a couple:
I was sitting near this one, which is called "Moth."
This one is called "Pink House."
Davis's artist statement ends with this: "My paintings are not meant to be didactic, rather to be read like pages torn from a strange storybook of narrative quandaries and puzzles."
It's interesting to contrast these pieces with some of her earlier work, as seen on her MNArtists page. A gallery with a wide range of images is on her website.
Davis is holding a popup sale at the Birchwood this Sunday from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Details on Facebook. But it's free to stop by and check out the paintings on the wall any time the Birchwood is open.
