Somewhere in all of my Twitter listings about livable cities, I'm sure I've used the term "road diet." If you don't know what that means, Jason Kottke recently had a post explaining it, including a short video to illustrate.
Basically, it means the city does more with less space. More people are able to use the street or road through more modes of transport, and (bonus!) with more safety for all.
(I love how the cars in this screen snapshot from the video all look like they're from the 1930s, yet the street and buildings are very current-looking.)
