A few months ago in my review of Kim Stanley Robinson's book New York 2140, I included a quote from Claes Oldenburg that read, “I am for an art that tells you the time of day, or where such and such a
street is. I am for an art that helps old ladies across the street.”
That made me think of these hand-drawn signs I saw recently at Trotter's Cafe:
