American = White to 30% of Republicans

This is where we are, according to a recent YouGov poll. They asked a random sample what factors make a person "an American."

Phillip Bump, recently departed from the Washington Post, wrote up the results in great detail, including the way Republican and Democratic respondents differed.

Aside from the disgusting but not surprising headline item — that 30% of Republicans think being white is a defining factor in being an American! — the survey also found that Republicans overall were more likely to have strong feelings about what defines an American than Democrats do:

I was in a similar state to those Democrats as I read the possible choices offered in the survey. I don't know that I would have picked any of the requirements. "Supports the Constitution" is the only one I would clearly consider, and whether I would have said I feel strongly about it on a survey, I don't know.

But we know who doesn't support the Constitution, as Bump points out.

Bump's essay from today, Blurred World, about how 2025 is an inflection point, is also worth reading.
