The Last Positivist Makes a Comparison

The person who wrote one of my favorite BlueSky posts (which was originally a tweet) has put up a thought-provoking blog post, comparing his experience of life in the UK (his home country) and the U.S., where he spent six years in graduate school.

First, here's the BlueSky post, which I thought I had included in a round-up some time, but I couldn't find it with search:

I really think at its heart philosophy is one giant battle, taking place over many eras and nations, between people who are basically pleasant bureaucrats and people who are sexy murder poets, and it’s both super important and super boring that the pleasant bureaucrats must win.

The blog post, with the rather obvious title Comparisons Between Life in the UK and the USA, is here

It covers a number of key areas, but this one stood out to me:

People in the UK are poorer than the USA, but have more free time and live longer. You might wonder - how much money would I spend to have more time to spend with my friends and family, both just in terms of literal years alive and also in terms of time to do as one wills?

Overall, it's a very fair-minded assessment of the two cultures, in my opinion.
