And It Had the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval, too

Here's a straggler that didn't fit well into yesterday's Twitter round up, since I wanted to include some of the comments. It came from the Twitter feed of Cory Doctorow.

(Click to enlarge for better reading of the fascinating dialog.)

I'm glad this whole genre of ads — featuring women whose main concern seems to be what foods to make for the men in their lives — doesn't seem to exist anymore.

Some of my favorite comments on this ad were about how it violates the 180-degree rule (switching the positions of the two women characters) and how confusing that is. Several of the commenters couldn't get over that basic bit of compositional incompetence.

Others were more attuned to the specifics of the content:

too butch for sugar but not too butch to get excited over a salad
@ArtistFailure

Bill has clearly forgotten her name.
Lepus Marj @Lepus_Studios

I'm taking it as an invocation to the Goddess.
Charlotte Honigman @honigmaydl

Meanwhile the boy next door with a sweet tooth is going to die alone for being a sissy I guess
elizabeth lorraine @elorraine_

No, he's going to marry the rich guy who IS Bill (not just a bachelor like Bill).

for those curious, this is the "swell recipe"
Frankie Thomas @frankie_jay_tho

Frankie Thomas provided an enlarged image of the recipe, but I have typed it in for your "cooking" pleasure.

Savory Supper Salad
(serves 6)

1 envelope 1/4 pkg Knox Sparkling Gelatine*
3/4 c cold water
1 c hot water
2/3 tsp salt
1/4 c mild vinegar
1 1/2 c grated American cheese
1/2 c stuffed olives, chopped
1/2 c celery, chopped
1/4 c green pepper, chopped
1/2 cup cream or evap. milk (whipped)

Pour cold water in bowl and sprinkle gelatin on top of water. Let soak 5 minutes. Add hot water and stir until dissolved. Add salt and vinegar, cool, and when it begins to thicken, beat until frothy. Fold in cheese, olives, celery, pepper and whipped cream or evaporated milk. Turn into mold that has been rinsed in cold water and chill. Serve with salad dressing.

*Use pure, unsweetened gelatin. Gelatine dessert powders won't do.

Yum, hey?

It's hard to read, but I note the address to send for a free recipe book is in Johnstown, New York.

As a man, I always enjoy a salad made with two kinds of water.

On a more serious note, I remember the Lea and Perrins bottle used to have suggestions for “dishes men like.”

I have an ad somewhere — for Hellman’s? — about salads and men and “rabbit food.” I’ll see if I can find it.

This is the Hellmann’s ad.

Oof. And as an aside, I'll bet their agency hated having to do that dual branding. I've never heard of the western name... I wonder when they did away with it?

It’s still Best Foods “west of the Rockies.” I called their 800- number once to ask if there’s an exact dividing line. The person I spoke to had no answer beyond “west of the Rockies,” “east of the Rockies.”

Well, darn. I suppose I find that endearing.
