Individualism in Translation

A thought for today from education writer Alfie Kohn:

American individualism is reflected even in the translations of foreign film and book titles. The French film “La Loi du MarchĂ©” (Law of the Market) became “The Measure of a Man” when released here. The Swedish “Men Who Hate Women” became “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” in the U.S.
Wow, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was actually called Men Who Hate Women? Now there's a name that wouldn't sell well in the U.S.

Yeah, I knew about the Swedish title of "The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo." It would have been death for it here. This year especially we're seeing in American society just how much men still hate women in this country.

Maybe so. We'll have to see how Trump does. I don't think so very well...:)
