These Words May Not Mean What You Think They Mean

Headlines: Can't read with them, can't read without them. Case in point, this recent one from the C.J. column in the Star Tribune:

Headline over story reads Ponder mum on late arrival
If you're like me and you have no clue that Ponder is a football player's last name, this headline is difficult to parse. This was my best attempt:
