Flower Power and More

1967 black and white photo of a young blond man placing a flower into the end of a National Guard soldier's rifle
Bernie Boston, photographer of the historically important photo Flower Power, died recently. Everyone over 40 knows this photo, I imagine, since it is (as the obits all said) "iconic."

But Boston had a long career and shot a lot of other important moments and people, brought together in the book Bernie Boston: American Photojournalist. Here is some of his other work.

Black and white photos of Paul McCartney carrying his bass to a concert at Cleveland ballfield, Martin Luther King speaking, and an African-American soldier in fatigues holding a bundle of small American flags
And do you remember this photo from Hands Across America, the day in May 1986 when 7 million people stood together from New York to California to raise money to fight hunger and homelessness? I had almost forgotten about it until I saw this image:

Black and white photo of people standing in a rural area, holding hands, America flag near the center, shot from a distance behind them

Bernie Boston, 1933 - 2008
