This Is the Hed



It's a bit small in this image, but check out the "deck" on this article, which dates from February 11, 1996. The Guthrie Theater, then located on Vineland Place, was doing a new musical production of "Babes in Arms." So the copy editor wrote this semi-clever headline, but missed the follow-through on the deck. I imagine the writer, theater critic Peter Vaughn, was not amused.

I've had this clipping in the filing cabinet ever since, but now I can recycle it! I was fond of showing this fine example of Star Tribune copy editing to a class I used to teach in the Journalism School at the U. Believe it or not, it ran on the front of the Entertainment section on a Sunday. Sheesh. And this was long before the buy-outs and layoffs.
