From a news story about Amazon's "natural" gas power plant planned for Texas, which will generate more greenhouse gas emissions than any other single source in the U.S. It's "needed" because of AI, of course.
The Seattle-based tech giant has acknowledged that rising emissions from AI data centers could get in the way of its climate goals.
"The world looks different now than when we cofounded the climate pledge," said [the spokesperson]. Still, "our commitment hasn't changed"...
Oh, right. Keep saying you have the commitment, while your actions show otherwise. We live in the age of saying one thing and doing another, and no one being held accountable. It definitely helps when the people who own the worst offenders also own the largest media companies.
The plant's permit allows 33 million tons of C02 into the atmosphere per year. That's more than twice as much as the current worst, a coal-burning power plant in Alabama.
And of course, that doesn't account for water use, or any other impacts of the data center itself.
