About 48 hours ago, ICE agents grabbed a green card-holder named Mahmoud Khalil from his family's apartment in Manhattan because the Trump administration doesn't like what he has had to say about Palestine. It appears the agents may have thought Khalil was not a permanent resident, but was instead here on a student visa, but when they were informed he's a permanent resident (married to a U.S. citizen) they snatched him anyway.
A recent Master's degree graduate from Columbia University, Khalil had contacted the university the day before to say he feared for his safety, and specifically that he thought ICE might try something. Columbia did nothing, and has yet to make any statement about this violation of both the 1st Amendment and due process. It was not clear until midday today where Khalil was being held. The reporter who originally broke the news of his detention also reported he had been moved to a facility in Louisiana. As shown in one of the last BlueSky posts I quote here, Khalil was moved there after his attorney had filed a writ of habeas corpus in New York.
Disappeared: Mahmood Khalil
Disappeared count: 1
Khalil was a Columbia University graduate student, US permanent resident, and husband of a US citizen detained by order of the White House on 3/9/2025. He spoke out against the Israeli government, which is believed to be the reason he was targeted.
USA Disappeared Tracker
Mahmood Khalil is the first person to have been disappeared by this administration. He will not be the last.

the fact that people are being disappeared in the name of "preventing antisemitism" by a christian nationalist administration is making me nauseated and horrified in ways i cant even begin to explain. it's bullshit, it's lies, and it's being abetted by feckless american jewish institutions that are performing about as well in the face of fascism as they did in the 1930s. but just to be clear if the trump administration gave a shit about antisemitism, as opposed to just lusting to oppress palestinians/immigrants, they would not employ so many nazis

Immigrants, trans people, palestinian rights activists, eventually it’s going to be your turn when the regime decides you are an enemy
Adam Serwer
Fascinating how so many of the same people who were outraged when Putin disappeared Navalny are just fine when it happens here.

some helpful reminders:
-not all jews support israel
-criticizing israel is not the same as being antisemitic
-being pro-palestine does not equal being pro-hamas
-arresting someone for being pro-palestine is a violation of the first amendment
-violating someone’s first amendment rights is bad
Marisa Kabas
"This is the first arrest of many to come."
"We expect every one of America's Colleges and Universities to comply."
I mean, what else is this but authoritarianism? Ideas and speech made illegal and people being apprehended without due process. And Republicans just applaud!

The President of the United States is vowing to disappear students from college campuses who say things the government doesn't like. There are not enough alarms for this.
Seth Masket @smotus.bsky.social
I really wish people would care about Trump using Pinochet's tactics to disappear people for speaking their mind.

This may be the biggest free speech crisis in living memory. The president now bragging about detaining a lawful permanent resident and smearing him as 'pro Hamas', no outlining any specific crimes he is accused of or charged with. This is what a fascist takeover looks like.
Mehdi Hasan
if you find yourself reluctant to support the guy at Columbia because you find some of the politics he espoused distasteful or even abhorrent, you should know that this is exactly the reaction that they hoped for in choosing him as a target for unlawful detention based on political speech.
William B. Fuckley @opinionhaver.bsky.social
we're in legit first they came for territory and a lot of people have been failing at this test they cite all the time
Joshua Erlich
Yeah, this is a perennial truth -- landmark struggles over free speech typically involve people who are saying and doing things that are *unpopular*. That's, uh, why they need the protection of the First Amendment. It's sort of the whole point.

As an American Jew, let me be clear:
-Criticizing Israel is not being "antisemitic"
-Defending the human rights of Palestinians is not being pro-Hamas
-Arresting someone for these things is a violation of our 1st Amendment
-Violating 1st Amendment rights, and bragging there's more to come, is bad
Peter Gleick
It continues to be gross how many Democrats are forgetting the true Golden Rule: If you're about to say, "fascists have a point about this marginalized group they're scapegoating," you should shut up, punch yourself in the face and not speak again until you've watched a few Holocaust documentaries.

You know what else are "Terrorist organizations"? Proud Boys, KKK, and numerous other White Supremacist gangs. Are they going to arrest & deport them too?
quick13
""Activities aligned to… a designated terrorist organization" is a construction previously unheard of in the generation-long history of tortured official circumlocutions designed to obscure lawlessness in the guise of counterterrorism."
Kelsey Atherton
It was only *after* the habeas petition was filed, per Khalil's lawyers, that the efforts to transfer Khalil began in earnest — without notice to those lawyers in the pending habeas petition.
Chris Geidner
Warning: Fascists believe a very wide array of First Amendment activity is “anti-American.” This will not stop here.
Domestic Enemy Hat @kenwhite.bsky.social
Donald Trump, of course, posted that this is the first of many arrests to come.
