Alex Doonesbury Knew in the ’90s

Another unexpected driving-related bit of media from the past:

This strip from at least 30 years ago appeared in the newspaper yesterday, and there was a related one today. Today's hit some of the criticisms of SUVs (like the climate crisis and safety due to increased rollovers). 

These strips ran during the Clinton administration, when it could have been possible to do something before SUVs began to proliferate, encouraged by federal policy (and of course by car company's interest in their bottom lines). 

But nothing happened… and then there was the Bush administration… and here we are, with larger and larger SUVs every year, and trucks and SUVs dominating the market in a way Garry Trudeau couldn't have imagined when he wrote this strip.
