Portraits Then and Now

One of my recent follows on Twitter, Leah McElrath, posted a thought that the 1880s photograph of Susie King Taylor (which I wrote about here) may have have echoes in those now-iconic portraits of Barack and Michelle Obama by Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald:

It's hard to see the two of them and the SKT portrait side by side and be sure it's not true:

I wonder if the Obama painters knew of the photo? It's not mentioned in the reference articles I see with a quick look, at least.

It appears the paintings are on tour and are currently at the Art Institute of Chicago. Hmm. Road trip?
