For today, a mystery self-portrait of a famous artist, painted when he was 16 years old:

Who is the artist? And does the answer reveal the name of the city I visited recently?

Obviously Van Gogh, so...Arles?

The hair makes me think of de Kooning, but I don't think he would have been painting self-portraits as a teenager.

Is it (gulp) Jeff Koons?!

Here's a hint: it's in a museum dedicated solely to his art, which is the largest single-artist museum in the world.

I tried to go there once...on a Monday. Next time.

The answers are Andy Warhol and Pittsburgh... more on my visit to the Warhol museum can be found here.

Did he do self-portraits in the style of any other artists in addition to van Gogh?

As I recall, this was the only self-portrait they were displaying, at least from that formative period. Makes you wonder what is in the rest of the voluminous collection!
