It's not unique to Mainz, but for some reason I've been especially attuned to the pigeon-proofing lately.
Many of the lighted, free-standing-letter signs on stores have vicious-looking spikes all over them, which appear to be very effective at keeping the birds off:
Note the spikes inside some of the letters, like the F in FUR and the O in ROLA:
Even the lions gaurding the door of the Cathedral of Mainz need a little help scaring away the birds of a feather:
