Get ready for a disturbing photo:
Here's the original caption: "Derek Longo, 11, plays a video game, powered by a running car engine hooked up to a power inverter, outside his home at Bruce Apartments in Ashland, Ky., on Monday, July 2, 2012, where the electricity was still out due to Friday's storm damage. Sleeping on ground next to him is Joseph DeLong, and under the blanket is Aaron Salyers. (AP Photo /The Daily Independent, Kevin Goldy)"
I know it's only a single image from a single moment in this kid's life -- and maybe he just finished climbing a tree one minute earlier -- but what a representation of American life, and particularly the lives of our kids, this is.
The power is out, you have to go outside, so what do you do? You get someone to hook up your T.V. and game system to a gasoline-burning car so you can keep playing video games.

This is a very sad photo. Like a picture of a puppy behind bars at a pound. Only this boy doesn't even know he's trapped by his life's lack of momentum.
