I Just Flew in From Falcon Heights, and Boy...

Nicely made oval sign with large letters reading Falcon Arms Apartments
This sign is amusing enough, but in looking for a possible reason why someone might name an inauspicious, 1960s apartment building such an absurd name, I found out from wordreference.com that this usage of arms is derived from coat of arms, and particularly the way inns in jolly olde England were sometimes known by names like The Royal Arms.

It's an affectation (similar to the use of Court, Manor or Hall) that's common in the U.S., but is not particularly widely known in the U.K.

But really, there's got to be a limit on what nouns you can put in front of the word arms before passersby laugh in your face. Even if the building is in a town called Falcon Heights.

As seen on Larpenteur Avenue in Falcon Heights, Minnesota.
