Taking the Grunt of It in Margo Forehead

If you live in Minnesota or nearby, you know there's flooding along the Red River between Minnesota and North Dakota. Minnesota Public Radio seems to have gone wall-to-wall on the story.

In the midst of all the struggle and human drama, I couldn't help noticing a couple of examples of humorous mis-speaking as I drove home today. Without meaning to trivialize the situation, here's what I heard.

First, host Tom Crann said half of a great Spoonerism when he meant to list the names of the two largest cross-border cities, which are generally referred to as Fargo-Moorhead, but instead started to say Margo Forehead. He stopped himself just in time (he actually only said Margo, realized where he was going, then paused and correctly said Fargo-Moorhead).

Soon after, he did an interview with Aaron Duma, who manages Usher's House restaurant in Moorhead. Mr. Duma explained that his restaurant -- which, according to its website, is "Nestled in Davey Memorial Park Overlooking the Scenic Red River of the North" -- is not near many other places of business, so the restaurant "is kind of taking the grunt of it here."

There is probably a lot of grunting going on in Margo Forehead right now as thousands of volunteers heft sandbags to raise the level of the flood walls. Good luck to everyone there.

I made many trips across the Red River to Zap, North Dakota and other destinations as a child, where we amused ourselves with Margo Forehead and More-go/Far-head jokes...so sad that they are taking the grunt of it there with the sandbags and flooding!

Hello Daughter Number Three.
Got a chuckle from your latest post. I was listening to MPR this morning and Perry Finelli was starting a story on the flood and began saying "this is Perry Finelli--head", then corrects himself and repeats his last name, and rolls into his story on the Moorhead portion of the flood.
Thought of you immediately and had to see if you heard this as well.
Read your blog daily and thoroughly enjoy your commentary.
Thank you

elena -- you can tell I'm not from these parts... I've never heard the Margo Forehead Spoonerism before.

Laurie -- I didn't get to listen to MPR this morning, since I left for work really early in a vehicle with no radio. From now on I will have a hard time not thinking of him as Perry Finellihead!
