I''m a latecomer to the MinnPost party. Once in a while throughout election season, I perused David Brauer's columns. But for me, it's really come into its own in covering the Franken/Coleman recount, and Friday's longish but excellent "notebook" piece by former Strib sportswriter Jay Weiner is a real standout.
I've never read the sports section, and so missed Weiner's 20-plus years of work at the Strib, but this piece makes me think twice about catching up on what's happening with the Vikings on MinnPost (just kidding). Weiner shares his thought processes as a reporter who's a neophyte at campaign coverage, but an old hand at reporting and covering the Twin Cities.
MinnPost is written by dozens of former Star Tribune and Pioneer Press writers (plus more from the City Pages, Twin Cities Reader, and other smaller papers). Friendly faces like Doug Grow and Steve Berg pop up. Brauer writes a column called the Daily Glean, where he pulls together the top local stories of the day first thing in the morning.
It'll be a good way to start the day once there aren't any more print dailies (right now I usually read it in the evening).
Speaking of the newspaper diaspora, Brauer has the best coverage and analysis of the financial tsunami that currently seems to be drowning the Strib. Sheesh. It sounds like they might not make it through breakfast tomorrow. (See also this blog entry by former Strib managing editor Tim McGuire, now a journalism professor in Arizona.)
