There's an area in the North Pacific, between California and Hawaii, where four major ocean currents come together. Sounds nice.
But in our disposable culture, that convergence means huge quantities of garbage, dumped in the ocean at some point, float together and then stay there, covering an estimated 5 million square miles. Which equals the land mass of the U.S. (yes, including Alaska) plus India.
Two men are rafting toward this spot on a raft made from plastic bottles and other reused materials, trying to raise awareness of the problem. They named their raft Junk, and of course they have a blog set up to get the word out.
Good luck to Marcus Eriksen and Joel Paschal as they make their way and make their point.
