Eponymous in Buffalo

For a city whose name is not derived from the large brown mammal native to North America, there sure are a lot of images of buffalos to be found in the Queen City.

Carved stone buffalo statue head with round friendly eyes, coming out of a building wall
I love this friendly looking beast, located above and between the doors of the old post office in downtown Buffalo.

Buffalo, three dimensional, tan, above the arched doorway of a building
Check out the terra cotta buffalo head above the arch keystone of the Market Arcade.

Granite bas relief buffalo on a time capsule commemorating Buffalo's sesquicentennial, 1982
Downtown, east of city hall.

Brass buffalo statue
On the University at Buffalo north campus. UB's sports name is The Stampede.

Brass bas relief
On the elevator doors at Ellicott Square. This building is amazing, and I heard that it was used as a location in the film "The Natural."

Black iron cut out buffalo
Over a doorway along Elmwood Avenue. Note the ghost sign below, which reads "Buffalo Prototyping." I assume they did prototyping of things that weren't just buffalos.

Upright buffalo carved in wood, stained honey colored
I assume this sculpture, located at the harbor front, was done with a chainsaw.

Black iron buffalo in an arch on the side of a bus bench
These bus benches were in several spots along Elmwood Avenue.
